What do the colors on a capacitor mean?

The colors painted on the capacitors body are called color bands. All the color bands painted on the capacitors body are used to indicate the capacitance value and capacitance tolerance. Each color painted on the capacitors body represents a different number.

How can we determine the value of resistor capacitor from color code?

By using the color code chart, one finds that green stands for 5 and blue for 6. The third band is the multiplier, with red representing a multiplier value of 2 (102). Therefore, the value of this resistor is 56 · 102 = 56 · 100 = 5600 Ω. The gold band means that the resistor has a tolerance of 5%.

How do you read capacitor value codes?

The first two numbers represent the value in picofarads, while the third number is the number of zeroes to be added to the first two. For example, a 4.7 μF capacitor with a voltage rating of 25 volts would bear the marking E476. This translates to 47000000 pF = 47000 nF = 47 μF.

What color wires go on a capacitor?

HVAC Capacitor Wiring Color Codes & Connections - Basics

How do you identify a capacitor?

Generally the first two digits indicate the capacitors value and the third digit indicates the number of zero's to be added. For example, a ceramic disc capacitor with the markings 103 would indicate 10 and 3 zero's in pico-farads which is equivalent to 10,000 pF or 10nF.

What is a blue capacitor?

The blue ones are varistors. They start to conduct at some voltage, probably about 15V, to remove high voltage spikes.

What does K and J mean in capacitor?

K means that the capacitance tolerance is 10% (F=1%, J=5%, K=10%. These are most common resistance and capacitance tolerances). MF does not mean Micro Farad. Probably it stands for Metallized Film, which indicates the capacitor type/material.

What are different types of capacitors?

Types of Capacitors

  • Ceramic Capacitors.
  • Film Capacitors.
  • Power Film Capacitors.
  • Electrolytic Capacitors.
  • Ceramic capacitors.
  • Film capacitors.
  • Paper capacitors.
  • Electrolytic capacitors.

How is capacitance value calculated?

This calculates the capacitance of a capacitor based on its charge, Q, and its voltage, V, according to the formula, C=Q/V.

What are 0.1 UF capacitors for?

This is a very common 0.1uF capacitor. Used on all sorts of applications to decouple ICs from power supplies. 0.1" spaced leads make this a perfect candidate for breadboarding and perf boarding.

What does K mean on a capacitor?

k means thousand. On a capacitor, when it's used, the implied unit is the picofarad. So 470k on a capacitor means 470,000 picofarads, or 0.47 microfarads.

What is number code of capacitor?

Ceramic capacitors encoding consists 1-3 digits. If the capacitor code consist only 1 or 2 digits, it is simply their capacitance value in PicoFarads (pF). For example if a ceramic capacitor has a code '5' and other has '47', their respective capacitance values are 5 pF and 47 pF.

What do the numbers mean on a capacitor?

The higher the voltage rating on your capacitor (or other electrical item) the faster the electrical current moves. The second rating is the microfarad (MFD) rating. A microfarad is a term to describe a capacitor's level of capacity. That means the higher the microfarad rating, the more electrical current it can store.

Can I replace a capacitor with a higher uF?

You can almost always replace a capacitor with one of a higher voltage. This is the limiting factor of a capacitor due to dielectric breakdown voltages that the manufacturer chose.

What happens if you wire a capacitor wrong?

Most capacitors are polarity sensitive - ie. they won't work properly if you insert them the wrong way round. Note that these little dudes will quite happily blow up if you put too much current or voltage through it, or if you connect it the wrong way round (although that only applies to the electrolytic capacitor).

Which wire goes where on a capacitor?

The brown wire goes on one end of the new capacitor. The purple or yellow wire goes on the other end of the new capacitor. This is also a power lead, you will need to make a jumper wire to go from this terminal to the "C" terminal on the old 3 prong capacitor.

How do you connect a capacitor?

Connecting it together. The two metal plates on the top and bottom of a cap are connected by two electrical terminals that connect it to the rest of a circuit. One end of the capacitor connects to power, and the other flows to ground.

How do you tell which end of a capacitor is positive?

The positive or anode side of the capacitor is marked with a “+” symbol. Since electrolytic capacitors are polarized, I use a symbol (shown below) on my schematics. Schematic symbol for polarized capacitors as shown in Eagle.

How do you select a capacitor?

The capacitor's voltage rating should always be at least 1.5 times or twice the maximum voltage it may encounter in the circuit. Capacitors are not as reliable as resistors. They get easily damaged once the applied voltage nears their maximum rating.
