1/4 Thread Dimensions
1/4 thread dimensions
Measure the Inside of a Female Thread Port: If it is 11.9mm Internal Diameter — then the actual port size is a Female 1/4" BSP Thread. If it is 15.2mm Internal Diameter — then the actual port size is a Female 3/8" BSP Thread. If it is 19.1mm Internal Diameter — then the actual port size is a Female 1/2" BSP Thread.

What is a 1/4 thread in MM?
BSP Thread Size | Outside Diameter mm / inch | TPI |
---|---|---|
1/4 Inch BSP | 13.16 mm / 0.518" | 19 |
3/8 Inch BSP | 16.66 mm / 0.656" | 19 |

5/8 Inch BSP | 22.99 mm / 0.902" | 14 |
What size is a 1/4 thread?
As a general “rule of thumb” an NPT thread is approximately 1/4" (0.25”) larger than its “name.” For a 1/4" NPT fitting the “nominal” OD is 0.533”. NPT fittings are slightly tapered so the “nominal” diameter is the diameter in the middle of the threaded portion, as measured by the top (crest) of the threads.
Are NPT and BSP the same?
NPT and BSP threads are not interchangeable due to the differences in thread forms. NPT threads are pointed in the peaks and valleys, where BSPs are rounded. Most notably, the NPT thread angle is 60 degrees versus the BSP 55-degree angle.
How do I know my BSP thread size?
The easiest way is to count the thread crests over a shorter length, say 1/4", and simply multiply it by 4. For example, if you count 3.5 thread crests over 1/4": 3.5 x 4 = 14 threads per inch. Take this measurement and cross-reference it to your thread size in the chart below.
Is NPT measured by ID or OD?
To determine the size of a pipe, the outside diameter of each pipe or fitting must be measured and compared to the table for size identification. For example, a 3/4" NPT pipe thread has an outside diameter of 1.050 inches.
What size hole do I drill for a 1/4 NPT tap?
Tap Size | Drill Size | Tap and Drill Set |
---|---|---|
1/4" NPT Tap | 7/16" Drill Bit | 1/4" NPT Tap and Drill Set |
3/8" NPT Tap | 37/64" Drill Bit | 3/8" NPT Tap and Drill Set |
1/2" NPT Tap | 23/32" Drill Bit | 1/2" NPT Tap and Drill Set |
3/4" NPT Tap | 59/64" Drill Bit | 3/4" NPT Tap and Drill Set |
What's NPT stand for?
NPT (or National Pipe Taper) is a U.S. standard for tapered threads widely used on pipes and fittings for over 100 years. NPT connections rely on thread deformation- a metal to metal sealing design where the threads of the connectors themselves form together.
What is thread in mm?
Metric thread pitch is the distance between the threads. For example, an M18x2. 5 thread means the diameter of the nut or bolt is 18 millimeters and that there are 2.5mm between the threads.
What is major diameter of thread?
Major Diameter: The largest diameter of the thread of the screw or nut. The term “major diameter” replaces the term “outside diameter” as applied to the thread of a screw and also the term “full diameter” as applied to the thread of a nut. Minor Diameter: The smallest diameter of the thread of the screw or nut.
Is BSP same as metric?
Although BSP is a foreign thread, it isn't actually metric. This is why it comes in imperial sizes: 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and so on. BSP parallel threads commonly seal via a 30° chamfer on the male thread to a 30° recessed cone inside the female thread (swivel only).
What number is a 1/4 inch screw?
Size | Major Thread Diameter* | |
---|---|---|
Decimal | Nearest Fractional Measurement | |
#12 | .216" | 7/32" |
#14 | .242" | 1/4" |
#16 | .268" | 17/64" |
Is a #12 screw the same as 1 4?
The diameters listed in the chart below are in fractions of an inch, so the #12 is just shy of 1/4 inch. A more detailed table with thread count can be found below, along with tap drill sizes. Detailed screw sizes charts.
What size is a 1/4 bolt?
Table B1 HEX BOLT DIMENSIONS | ||
---|---|---|
Bolt Size | A (max) | F Thread Length for Bolt Length |
1/4" | 0.260 | 0.750 |
5/16" | 0.324 | 0.875 |
3/8" | 0.388 | 1.000 |
Is UNF the same as NPT?
UNF is Unified Fine thread, the successor to the obsolete National Fine (NF) thread. NPT National pipe thread is used (in the U.S.) for plumbing of water and gas pipes, and threaded electrical conduit. NPT is defined by ANSI/ASME standard B1. 20.1, American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread.
Is G thread same as NPT?
Eyeballing the Difference Between NPT and G Connections. When placed side by side, the difference between the two connection types is clear. The NPT thread is slightly tapered, while the G connection is straight. Another obvious visual: The G connector ends with a small protrusion (nipple), used to center the gasket.
What is BSP thread size?
BSP Size | Also Known As | Actual Diameter (Imperial) |
---|---|---|
5/8" | 18 BSP | |
3/4" | 20 BSP | 1 inch |
1" | 25 BSP | 1 & 1/4 inch |
1 & 1/4" | 1 & 2/3 inch |
What is meant by BSP thread?
British Standard Pipe (BSP) is a set of technical standards for screw threads that has been adopted internationally for interconnecting and sealing pipes and fittings by mating an external (male) thread with an internal (female) thread.
What's the difference between BSP and BSPT?
This one is quite simple, a BSP thread is British Standard Pipe and BSPT thread is British Standard Pipe Tapered.
